Central Region have a visit planned for Tuesday 17th August to Sandbank, near Dunoon. This will combine the issues of deer management with forestry operations. As deer populations continue to rise there are major issues affecting forestry. Not least is understanding the true costs of an effective regime set against a market price for a carcass that is less than half what it was forty years ago.

The day will include a safari through Glen Massan and Glen Lean to view previous and current harvesting operations. Particular attention to quality control throughout the restructuring phase has big implications for long term economic performance. Reducing the requirements for Cat 1 roads by using in-forest haulage on a Morooka based low ground pressure vehicle will be discussed. As this is an active harvesting site, all attendees will be required to carry his-vis and a hard hat.

The second part of the day will be to Winston Churchill Venison’s operating base at Balagowan to see their processing facility and to continue discussions. Winston’s retail outlet will be open! We recommend that you check out their website

Our hosts for the morning will be John Hartz, the owner of Glen Massan and Digby Guy; the afternoon host will be Winston and Angus Churchill.

Subject to Covid restrictions having been lifted on the 9th August, lunch will be provided and will be venison based. Depending on the weather we will either enjoy a panoramic view over Loch Tarsan or be under cover at Balagowan.

Rendezvous is for 10am at a layby/forest entrance on the minor road into Glen Massan from the A815. There is a sign for Glen Massan and the turning is about 750m towards Sandbank from the Cothouse service station and café. The Grid Ref of the layby is NS 138 840 or, the marvellously apposite what3words locator is visual.surely.loafing  If you would like to have a coffee on arrival please bring that with you. We will be aiming to finish the day at Balagowan at approx. 3.30pm.

The tour will be done in vehicles and a 4x4 is recommended. If you can team up with others before arrival that would be very helpful. We will endeavour to minimise the number of cars in the convoy by leaving surplus ones at the rendezvous. Total numbers restricted to 25 so please book early.

The day can be completed without any strenuous exercise but there are harvesting and restock sites to walk into if desired. Appropriate footwear and wet weather gear at your choice.
